National defense is everyone’s responsibility—expressed through our work, creativity, achievements, care, unity, and contribution to Indonesia.
Ayo Bela Indonesiaku was a national communication and awareness campaign for the Bela Negara (State Defense) Movement, initiated by the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Indonesia in 2017 to bring the values of national defense closer to society, particularly younger generations. Developed through social media, digital platforms, television, and off-air activities in collaboration with PT Idekami Kreatif Komunika, the program continued through 2019 under the tagline “AYO BELA INDONESIAKU – #INDONESIARUMAHKITA”, promoting Bela Negara as an everyday expression of patriotism, responsibility, and contribution to Indonesia.
The Bela Negara message carried significant strategic value, but the key challenge was how to communicate it in a way that was relevant, accessible, and engaging. At the time, Bela Negara was still widely perceived as being associated with the military, national defense, weapons, or compulsory military service, even though the Ministry of Defense defined it more broadly as a form of civic contribution that could be expressed through various professions and everyday activities.
The first communication challenge was to CHANGE THE PERCEPTION—shifting Bela Negara from an exclusive and military-oriented concept into something that every citizen could practice. At the same time, the campaign needed to REACH THE YOUNGER GENERATION, particularly Millennials and Gen Z, through the media platforms, language, and content formats they actively consumed.
Ultimately, the campaign needed to MAKE IT RELEVANT by connecting Bela Negara with everyday actions such as learning, creating, achieving, respecting differences, protecting the environment, using social media responsibly, and contributing to society. More importantly, it aimed to BUILD PARTICIPATION—transforming people from passive recipients of the message into active participants in the movement.
The communication strategy of Ayo Bela Indonesiaku translated the values of Bela Negara into the language of everyday life, built around five core principles: Love for the Nation, National and Civic Awareness, Loyalty to Pancasila, Willingness to Sacrifice, and Basic Capacity for National Defense. These values were then transformed into diverse communication formats to make the campaign accessible and relevant to different audiences, with a particular focus on Generation Y and Generation Z, while also engaging students, youth communities, civil society, professional groups, families, and the wider public.
The campaign adopted an integrated approach of MEDIA × COMMUNITY × CONTENT × EXPERIENCE, creating a communication ecosystem rather than relying on a single channel. Media included television, online portals, social media, and digital platforms; communities served as partners and amplifiers; content ranged from articles, videos, educational materials, and creative social media content; while experiences were delivered through events, activations, festivals, competitions, declarations, and community activities. Digital and social media played a particularly important role, with platforms such as websites, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, and other digital channels used to reach younger audiences and stimulate public conversation around Bela Negara.
A key innovation was the use of user-generated content, including the Ayo Bela Indonesiaku Vlog Competition 2018, which encouraged citizens, vloggers, bloggers, journalists, students, and young people to create and share their own interpretations of Bela Negara. This approach transformed audiences from “message receivers” into “message creators,” while strengthening media relations through interviews, television appearances, press conferences, editorial collaboration, news and feature coverage, digital publications, and public education content. The result was a more participatory communication model that connected government message × media × community × digital engagement × public experience.
